Spoilers within.
I’ve been looking forward to this movie for a long time. I had very high hopes for it, since it fits almost every favorite genre I have; adventure, early 20th century setting, obscure (and not so obscure) references to things outside the scope of the movie, and the pulling together of multiple stories. I wasn’t disappointed.
They took a good bit of license with the characters; Nemo’s sub was about the size of a modern nuclear class sub, and moved much faster than a modern one could.
The cgi was excellent, I didn’t see anything noticeably cgi, yet much obviously was.
There were nice twists in the story as well. I knew nothing about the comic going in, and deliberately didn’t research it. As such, I was well surprised when the head good guy turned out to be the head bad guy, and Dr. Moriarty to boot.
They left it open for a sequel at the end, though they killed the bad guy.
All in all, I liked it, and will rent it when it comes out, but probably won’t buy it.
