On 1 Dec we went north early in the morning. We drove 4.5 hours to my folks for Holiday time. We did Christmas, Thanksgiving, and birthday celebrations for my girls all at once. Joy ensued.

It was the first time I’ve gotten to see my Mom since her surgery. Except for a butch cut she looks pretty normal. Have you ever seen someone REALLY zoned, thinking so hard about something far away that they’re completely unaware of where they are? That’s how my Mom is unless you talk to her or get her attention. She comes back from it fine, but that’s her default state.

She prefers not to talk. She can, and when she does it’s in clear complete sentences, but she’d rather just smile or nod. Once I heard her say something that really didn’t make sense, but other than that she was “all there”. Right before we left I told her everybody I know is praying for her, and she said “Everybody I know is praying for me too.”

It was really good to see her, and I could tell she was happy to see us. The girls got to give her big hugs and some pictures. Sophi drew stick figures dancing in the snow with their tongues out to catch flakes. My mom smiled big at that.
