My sister first introduced me to The Old Crow Medicine Show last year. It took me a few listens to get to really enjoy them, it’s an acquired taste.
I’d have to call them modern bluegrass. They’re young, and slightly edgy, which may put off classic bluegrass fans. They appear to have an excellent appreciation for history though. The various musicians take turns singing lead, and they each have a distinct style, making different songs feel quite different in style. In “Tell It To Me” I immediately think of the Grateful Dead, and in the very next song, Big Time In The Jungle, I’d swear they were channeling Bob Dylan.
Whether you decide like them or not, they’re a fun cultural ride, worth trying at least once.
