I tried out phpMyAdmin 2.6.0-beta2 tonight, and some things I like, some things I’m not so sure about.
Functionally it’s not all THAT different, though there are some nice new features, like being able to select rows of data and then press an export button to export only those, and being able to pop up a calendar for date fields.
The most obvious changes are in the look and feel. It’s themable now, with a drop list to choose your theme. It has new icons everywhere, and lots of css all over the place.
I’m not sure how I feel about all the different colors and icons, but I’m willing to bet I’ll be able to get a simplistic theme. Themes are good in that way, allowing people with different tastes to use the same app with different views.
On the whole it looks quite cool, I’m very happy with the new functionality, and I can live with the new look.
One thing that continues to bother me about phpMyAdmin (and perhaps it’s just that I’m using it wrong and I’m an idiot) is the “SEARCH” function within every table. I can’t seem to get the dang thing to work when I’ve selected LIKE from the operator drop-down. I hope this has been addressed in the new version.
That bugged me for a long time too, then I remembered that with LIKE you have to put in wildcards (%) for it to work.
I think I read in the changelog that you don’t have to do that anymore with 2.6. 🙂
Okay, 3rd try to post w/out the form going wacko on me.
My two favorite new features are:
