The song “We Three Kings” is relatively old, coming from the mid-1800’s. It’s gotten a bit of a childish sheen from The Little Drummer Boy, but it’s actually a pretty serious hymn.

I love Patti Smith’s version because as I mentioned in my previous post, I like the idea of a more serious, edgy Christmas. This isn’t a sing full of toys and parties and gaity. This is the Son of God being thrust into a cold hard world that would hate and kill him.

I love the joy and happiness of Christmas, but I never want to forget that Christ’s work here was hard and powerful.
